What is New Leaders Yakima County, NLYC?
NLYC was founded in 2006 in support of United Way of Central Washington’s mission “to mobilize community leadership and resources to support the human needs in Central Washington”. NLYC provides recognition and opportunities for learning, development, and access to civic engagement.
How do I become a member of NLYC?
Any individual, 21 years of age or older, in good character, living or working in the Yakima County vicinity, is eligible for membership to New Leaders Yakima County (NLYC).
Is there a membership fee?
No. NLYC events are free of charge, although donations are encouraged.
NLYC is NOT a fundraiser, political or service club.
When are meetings held?
Meetings are traditionally held on the third Wednesday of the month from 5:30 – 7:30 pm. Location varies depending on the sponsor and topic of the evening. Invitations are usually sent through our electronic distribution list, please email Rebecca@uwcw.org to be included.
Can my friend attend the event if he/she is not a member?
Yes. Guests (21+) are welcome at all of our events.
Since NLYC is an initiative of United Way of Central Washington; does that mean I have to donate to UWCW to be a member?
No. NLYC was founded to promote the Valley and develop the leadership skills of our members through networking and socializing opportunities. Although we affiliate and encourage support of UWCW, donating to United Way is not a requirement.
How do I become a member of the Executive Committee?
Any active member in good standing can be considered for a position on the Executive Committee. Elections are held each May. Please contact a member of the Nominating Subcommittee of the Executive Committee for further information.
How are your sponsors and topics chosen?
NLYC encourages local organizations and businesses to host open houses introducing “new leaders” to their business and/or charitable interest, while simultaneously encouraging patronage and community involvement.
Hosts may make a brief curtain speech. Featured topics are allowed a presentation window not to exceed 20-minutes including Q & A. Presentation cannot be partisan-political or religious in nature. Use of PowerPoint and/or video is encouraged, but not required. If interested in sponsoring an event, please contact a member of the current Executive Team or email Rebecca.
As a sponsor, would I be responsible for the refreshments and hors d’oeuvres?
Hosts are encouraged to provide refreshments for attendees (light appetizers to heavy hors d'oeuvres, beer, wine and soft drinks). Depending on location and caterer, cost ranges from $500-$2,000 per event. Catering is the responsibility of the host. NLYC can provide a list of suggested caterers and venues.
