OTC

One of our great successes is a young Native American child who has been with the program since they were in 1st grade. This child has faced numerous challenges. Both parents of the child passed away when the child was just a baby. The child then lived with their grandparents until they passed away from natural causes when the child had just entered school age. Now they live with and are cared for by another relative. This child has not only persevered but has thrived. They have attended OTC from 1st through now 7th grade. They cite OTC and also Central Lutheran's Youth and Families programs with giving them a place where they can enjoy artistic pursuits, receive homework help, and explore their identity in a safe and inclusive space. They hope to one day attend an art program after they graduate from high school, and would be the first amongst their siblings to attend a post secondary education. This social, emotional, and educational support is how we try to turn the potential victims of intergenerational poverty into the first generation to pull themselves out from it, and become the next leaders for our communities.
